Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament?
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, also known as adoration of the Eucharist or adoration of the Holy Eucharist, is an act of worship and thus given to God alone. In adoration, Catholics worship and glorify Jesus Christ who is truly present in the Eucharist. Worship (latria) differs markedly from the veneration and honor (dulia and hyperdulia) given to the saints, especially the Blessed Mother.
What am I supposed to do in Adoration?
Be with Our Lord! God speaks to us in a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12) that is difficult to hear in our very noisy world. Listen for Him to speak to you. You may also do any number of prayers, such as the rosary, read any spiritual book, or just sit and listen.
Do I have to stay the whole time?
No. St. Alphonsus Ligouri states “Even a quarter of an hour’s prayer in front of the Eucharist perhaps gains more graces than all the other spiritual exercises of the day (outside of Mass).” Whatever time you can give to staying with Our Lord is beneficial and brings graces!
Do I have to do anything special when I come or go during Adoration?
Upon entering/exiting the pew, those physically able are asked to momentarily genuflect on both knees before Jesus’ real presence in the exposed Blessed Sacrament, and many adorers further choose to touch their hands and/or forehead to the ground in a kneeling prostrate form.
Can children attend Adoration?
Yes! Our Lord said “Let all the little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14) so bring them to Him! It is a good practice to bring your children to Our Lord in Adoration. If they get a little too noisy, feel free to step out to calm them down, but bring them back! In time, with practice, they will learn to sit in His presence too.
